Beauty Buzz

Following its first-ever consumer choice contest, NPD Group Inc., has announced the hottest prestige beauty brands based on a survey of women across the country. Here are the results—and no surprise, Estée Lauder again topped the list: Fragrance Company, Estée Lauder; Makeup, Bare Escentuals; Skin care, La Mer; and beauty service at retail, Nordstrom.

The awards coincided with NPD’s report on the state of the U.S. prestige beauty industry, which the company says grew by 2% in 2007 compared to 2006, with a total beauty figure for 2007 of $8.9 billion. Makeup, which led the segments with a 38% market share, rose to $3.4 billion, up 4%—the same percentage as skin care, which totaled a lower $2.5 billion. Fragrance dropped slightly, by 1% to $2.94 billion.
